A Love Letter For You

Stephen Powers & Joey Garfield host a series of collaborative Valentines.

A LOVE LETTER FOR YOU seamlessly mixes documentary and narrative, love and loss, community and solidarity, art and crime, to paint a compelling portrait of two artists and their impact on the neighborhood they grew up in. It was filmed in concert with a series of 50 murals, painted around the city of Philadelphia in the summer of 2009 when ESPO returned to his hometown and wrote a love letter across the rooftops that can be viewed from the ride on the cities elevated trains.

Quote of the Day

Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to loneliness. -Maya Angelou

Pates Tapes

.
I love few things more than music.  I am constantly nostalgic for vinyl, tapes, and above all else, mix tapes. I remember the hours, days, and weeks I used to spend with my boombox on the floor, hundreds of tapes (and later, CDs) scattered throughout my room, just listening and listening and planning and listening. Play / Stop / Play / Rewind / Play / Record / Stop. It was transcendent. And at the end of it all, this wonderful compilation of joy, anger, sadness, love, everything my body was screaming came out in this lovely rectangular form.
.
In years past, I’ve made a lot of mixes and I’ve had a lot of mixes made for me. There is truly no greater labor of love. I only wish I could have saved them all and followed in the footsteps of Charles Pates:

Brilliant.
